ABOUT THE CATAPULT

Launched in 2020 with the convening support of the UN’s High-Level Climate Action Champions and RMI, the Green Hydrogen Catapult is a global initiative whose goal is to drive a massive green hydrogen scale-up by 2026.

CHALLENGE

Of the 75 million tonnes of hydrogen produced annually worldwide, historically 98% uses fossil fuels. That results in more than 800 million tonnes of carbon emissions, greater than the entire annual carbon emissions of Belgium.

OPPORTUNITY

Green hydrogen—produced from water with electrolyzers powered by clean renewable electricity— can thus play a major role decarbonizing some of the world’s hardest-to-abate sectors.
Green hydrogen has transformational potential as both an end-use energy source and as an intermediate feedstock for products such as green ammonia. The catapult is focused on three key goals to make that vision a reality.

MEMBERS

A Pathway to Green Hydrogen at Scale

01
Scale up green hydrogen production capacity 50x
02
Deploy 80 GW of new renewables-powered electrolyzers, of which Catapult members have already committed 45 GW
03
Achieve a 50% cost reduction, getting green hydrogen below $2 per kg
